Buti yoga is based upon a Vinyasa yoga format, with the exception of holding static poses as in traditional vinyasa. It combines asana sequences, dynamic and primal movement, deep abdominal conditioning, dance and strength, and cardio-sprints. This well balanced practice tones and sculpts the entire body while facilitating internal transformation. Buti is an Indian Marathi word that means a “cure that has been kept secret;” the hope is that through Buti we tap into our inner cure. The music guides the class; using the beat to drive us out of our head and into our body. Additionally, Buti incorporates elements of shaking and vibration to help release stored trauma in the body. For this reason, you are encouraged to make noise, scream, or chant—whatever comes out naturally to support you in your release. The Buti space is all about creating a community that supports each other through soulful camaraderie and cultivation of connection.


Hello! My name is Tess, and I just moved to the East Bay from New York. I am a teacher at heart - I currently work as an elementary educator  and as a teacher consultant when I am off my mat. I began practicing Vinyasa yoga over 15 years ago at Yoga to the People in New York City. Since then, I have explored yoga studios around the world and practiced a variety of yoga styles, such as Bikram, Power, Yin, Ashtanga, and Hatha. I decided to deepen my practice when I became a Buti yoga certified instructor in 2019. After teaching at Raw Renewal Yoga in Buffalo for 3 years, NY for a few years, I received my 200hr-YTT in Tulum, Mexico, where I studied the Aligned Flow Method of yoga. Soulflow Oakland was the first yoga studio I attended after moving to the area. The warmth, inclusiveness, and supportive community helped the East Bay feel like home to me. I am beyond grateful to share my practice with you, alongside Satya and all of the other wonderful instructors at Souflow Oakland. My mission is to create a movement space in which you feel grounded, empowered and supported. Together let's connect body, breath, and spirit through Buti yoga! See you on the mat!
